Living in Atlanta, while not my favorite place, does have it advantages. I enjoy good food; unique food, and you can find just about anything to fit your taste in the Atlanta area. Recently Tammie and I went out to lunch at a little restaurant over in old Grant Park, just across from the historic Oakland cemetery called Doc Chey’s Noodle House.

This Asian inspired restaurant had a menu that screamed my name and great Yelp reviews, but when we entered we were the only ones there, which definitely had us questioning our decision!

It didn’t take long for the place to fill up though, and by the time our food was brought to the table Doc Chey’s was packed!

Menus are by the door when you enter the restaurant, so you just walk up, place your order, and sit yourself wherever to enjoy your meal, which is brought out shortly.

I ordered steamed Shanghai dumplings to start off our lunch. These were handmade and stuffed with pork and ginger. Honestly y’all, I could’ve ate seconds and thirds of these delicious dumplings and skipped a main entree!

Since it was a chilly, rainy day I chose Thai Coconut soup with shrimp for my entree.

The addition of chicken to the coconut soup made it extremely filling!

With red peppers, scallions, mushrooms, Asian pesto, chili oil and shrimp simmered in a coconut chicken broth this dish is packed with flavor as well!

As always I sipped water with my meal, but also added a pot of hot peach ginger green tea. The perfect accompaniment to this delicious lunch and the dreary southern winter day.

Wellness Wednesday: InTown Salt Room

While I no longer train clients or write much about it, I still train myself and keep up with health and wellness trends as I continue to strive to be healthy for myself and my family. Over the last couple of years I’ve really learned becoming healthy is very much a mind game as much as it is a physical game. In order to be truly healthy we must maintain a good relationship and balance between our minds, bodies, and spiritual lives. I have loved dabbling and studying homeopathic ways of healing the mind and body, and have been fascinated by certain methods from cryotherapy to essential oils for a while now.

If you read any health publication you’re likely to find an article referencing the benefits of pink Himalayan salt. It doesn’t matter if you have added it to your diet or added a salt lamp to your home, so many people I know have tested the waters using this useful organic mineral and are discovering a few of its benefits.

Last week I was invited to visit the InTown Salt Room located in the historic Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta. While you can sometimes find a Salt Room experience in a spa setting, the owner of InTown Salt Room, Carrie Wright, is proud to have the only space fully dedicated to salt therapy in Atlanta.

Intown Salt Room, is a technological and modern 1,000 square foot space with 6,000 pounds of Himalayan salt incorporated in the decor. It’s a serene setting from the moment you walk in, and you carry that serenity while feeling at peace when you walk out!

The salt covering the walls, floors, and through the building was mined from the salt caves of the Himalayan mountains and imported.

Intown Salt Room offers two unique salt room experiences, a Breathing Room and Meditation Room. Each breathing and meditation session is 30 minutes, where you simply sit in a zero gravity chair, relax to calming music and breathe.

The “breathe room” is a private getaway of Himalayan salt,” infused with the purest of salt air. Breathing in a dry salt room, known as dry salt therapy, can cleanse your airways and allow you to take in more oxygen for a deeper breath. In addition to respiratory benefits, dry salt can have a positive effect on skin and be naturally calming to help relieve stress, anxiety and fatigue.”

The treatment, known as dry salt therapy (or halotherapy), dates back hundreds of years to Eastern Europe (where it was noticed the miners of salt had less respiratory issues than others in the same communities), and is purported to offer a variety of health benefits. These include relief from respiratory ailments such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis, colds, ear infections and sinusitis, as well as skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, rashes and rosacea, as well as aiding in inflammation according to the Salt Therapy Association.

The “Meditation room” combines Himalayan salt with sound therapy to help you relax. “Slip on a pair of headphones and sink into one of their zero gravity Wave Loungers built with Acoustic Resonance Technology™, for a whole body sensory experience. This mind and body meditation encourages you to be present and calm, leaving you rested and rejuvenated.”

Completely rested and rejuvenated was exactly how I felt as I left the meditation room.  Honestly I felt like I didn’t have a single care in the world.

I really want a wall of salt bricks in my bedroom now.

While you can certainly do a salt room on your own, visiting with a friend is a great way to relax and enjoy this spa-like and unique experience! I invited Tammie ( Talking with Tami ) to accompany me. As relaxed as we were when we left the salt room, lunch out seemed to be even more laid back and enjoyable. We were both so relaxed!

I found myself completely absorbed in both salt room experiences, and I think I could definitely become a believer in the idea of salt therapy. This experience is definitely something I am open to doing again, and often.

Cakes and cupcakes are all the rage at any given celebration we host since I love playing with icing and swirls and sprinkles, but this summer I put down the piping bag filled with buttercream to allow the work of my talented girlfriend, Jess, take the stage!

When we were celebrating Bradley prior to his leaving for Boot Camp, I was looking for something different and fun to add to the day.  I mean we all love sweets, but sometimes buttercream is just too much and not everyone is a fan of fondant.  While brainstorming ideas, I happened to catch a post from Jess in my social media and it clicked…

We needed gorgeous, fun, colorful and themed cookies for the perfect addition to our party!

I have long admired Jess’s handiwork…. Y’all, she is so talented! Decorative cookies take a A LOT of patience and quite a bit of time; each one is a work of art. These aren’t your everyday cookies from the Publix bakery, no, these are special and made with care. From baby showers to my US Marine, Jess does a wonderful job making sure your cookies are not only delicious but the perfect centerpiece for your dessert buffet!

I can assure you these cookies are fantastic and delicious as they were completely wiped out in a matter of minutes!

Uncle Jack’s Meat House

There are restaurants you visit where you walk in, eat your food and leave, barely remembering what you ate.

Then, there are restaurants you visit where you walk in with friends, savor your meal as if you are in Cuba (where table time is much valued), linger just a bit longer over coffee and dessert, and then tell everyone you know about the evening out because the entire experience was just THAT spectacular!

It’s rare to find, but it does exist.

Over the weekend I was so fortunate to experience an unforgettable meal out with fabulous company and amazing food. My girl friend, Tammie asked me to accompany her to Uncle Jack’s Meat House in Duluth for an unforgettable tasting experience that will long remain a topic of discussion.

Uncle Jack’s Meat House in Duluth is an unassuming restaurant located on Sugarloaf Parkway  near the Infinite Energy Arena.  Despite being located in such a busy area for  over a year (they opened in late 2016), so many people still have not discovered this hidden gem!

Tammie and I were greeted warmly when we walked in.  We were given the option of indoor or outdoor dining; both of which are fabulous options.

The manager introduced us to our waiter, Luis, who treated us wonderfully! The decor is laid back and casual with a bit of an industrial vibe.  Guests were dressed as casual as shorts and tee-shirts to suits and dresses!  We dined with parents and their children, couples, groups of friends and even a group of teenagers.  Restaurant patrons were so diverse and everyone was welcomed the same!

The executive chef, Mitch came out and introduced himself to us and shared a little background of the restaurant.  Uncle Jack’s Meat House is owned by  Restauranteur and Food Network personality Willie Degel, who also owns two other restaurants in NYC.  Together Degel and Chef Mitch came up with a menu and concept for the restaurant.  After a little trial and error the menu and restaurant concept evolved into the fabulous restaurant it is now!

Chef Mitch is an Atlanta native who has put a decidedly Southern and delightfully Atlantan spin on the restaurant menu.  Everything is prepared fresh and to order here.  There are no prepackaged meals heated up in an oven, only fresh ingredients; as many as possible from local farms and dairies.  All sauces are even prepared on site; you will not find a bottle of A1 here, nor do you need it.  The only freezer is a small chest freezer that holds the ice cream for one of their desserts, which is also made onsite. Chef Mitch said they work hard to accommodate the dietary needs of guests, including those with allergies or gluten intolerance.

With your food cooked made from scratch and made to order, don’t expect your meals in five minutes.  This isn’t a heat your dish in the microwave and bring to the table restaurant.  This is a place for you to socialize over the table as each course is brought out, and to savor each bite you put into your mouth.  If you want to eat in a hurry this is not the place to eat, but if you truly want a memorable experience, make your reservation and plan to stay awhile!

Chef Mitch had several menu items already planned ahead to serve us, then had us also choose an entree.  Everything brought to our table was absolutely fantastic and every bite lovely to experience.

We also enjoyed selections of fresh local cheeses, cured southern meats, pickled onions, cherry jam and whole grain mustard on a Charcuterie board.

USDA Choice Steak:

For our entrees Tammie and I enjoy selections from the steak menu.  I tried the 35 day dried aged rib chop (this is enough for THREE meals!) cooked medium rare.

Sharing Sides:

The menu at Uncle Jack’s Meat House is ala cart, but the sides are completely sharable and options are just fabulous! We tried four delicious side dishes with our steaks.  By far the CornGasm Brûlée and collard greens were my favorite!

And if all of the above wasn’t enough, we had dessert.

But the Fudge Brownie Soufflé served with Salted Caramel Ice Cream was probably the best dessert I have EVER enjoyed!  This dish is prepared when you order it, so it takes around 20 minutes to be out at your table.  Don’t be impatient.  The wait is totally worth it!

Uncle Jack’s Meat House is open for lunch and supper Monday through Friday and for supper on Saturday and Sunday.  They went from empty to packed within 30 minutes of our 6:30 arrival on a Friday night, so make a reservation!
